When Harley introduced the XR1200 last year, they decided to exclude the U.S. market which seemed to stoke envy and desire U.S. enthusiast. Good news is, that the flat-track inspired bike is available stateside, starting from $10 799 in black. The 2011 XR1200X boasts an air-cooled, silver powdercoated 1200cc Evolution V-twin engine. The powerplant has 90 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque – more horsepower but less torquethan other versions of this engine.
A hollow cast aluminium swingarm promises better handling than steel unit found in typical Sportsters. Four-piston, dual-disk Nissin brakes suggest that the 2011 model is less laid back than past examples. The retro-influenced tank and the wide handlebars lend the XR1200X a distinctive look. A dry weight of 551 lbs won’t allow it to confuse with featherweight japanese sportbikes, but the XR1200X is still neither fish nor fowl. It’s no superbike and no cruiser either, rather a unique combination of dirt track inspired history projected onto a modern roadbike with decent performance.
