Piaggio has decided to launch Vespa scooters in India from 2012, starting with the LX125. India is the world’s second largest motorcycle market with 8.4 million units having been sold in 2009. The sale of scooters accounted for about 1.3 million units. The enormous market is currently dominated by Honda, but Suzuki and Mahindra has a significant market share, too.
Vespa will build a new factory in the country where it will produce up to 150 000 units per year. The italians invest a total of about 30 million euro in India in financial years 2010 and 2011, but the italians hope, the revenue will reach 70 million euro in 2015. The indian market is not completely unknown for the Piaggio Group, the marque is already one of the leading manufacturers of commercial three-wheelers, selling more than 180 000 units last year.
