BMW Motorrad is pleased to add a range of functional garments to its collection of Rider Equipment: the Function Shirt and T-Shirt. The Function range fuses advanced manufacturing techniques with the extraordinary properties of natural fibres – in this case from the coconut – to keep riders cool, dry and odour-free. BMW Motorrad is the first manufacturer to utilise Cocona in a motorcycling garment.
Cocona is an innovative modern textile in which activated carbon fibre from the coconut shell is woven into the threads used in a garment. The fibre itself delivers excellent moisture transportation away from the skin, has an antibacterial effect, offers UV protection and is odour-inhibiting – perfect for summer riding. The fibres have a huge surface area, more than ten times that of conventional threads and fabrics, allowing for much higher radiation of heat energy. In addition, these active particles harness the heat energy from the wearer’s body and use it to convert liquid to vapour, rapidly accelerating the drying process.
Because the Cocona technology is part of the fabric fibres, it will not wash out or wear off, quite the opposite, as the garment ages, the surface area increases, which means the effectiveness is retained or improved as time goes on. The Function shirts also offer SPF40+ UV protection. The Function range includes both long- and short-sleeved shirts in a range of sizes, with a lightly fitted option for ladies. Sizes range from XS-XXL for women and S-XXXL for men.
