It’s not uncommon that large car manufacturers take a detour into the world of motorcycles. BMW produces motorcycles for 90 years now and Mercedes-Benz bought shares through its AMG department in MV Agusta. There are even rumors about Ferrari getting into the bike business. Jaguar is also not known for its two-wheelers but Hungarian designer Tamas Jakus still created a Jaguar motorcycle concept called the 7MC.
You say: Jaguar motorcycle? They never produced any bikes. That’s true, but there’s more to the story. In the 1920s and 1930s a British company you’ve never heard of – Swallow Sidecar Company – was producing motor vehicle bodies, including motorcycle sidecars. The firm grew into Jaguar Cars Limited in 1945 but the shareholders never wanted the sidecar business so they sold it to an aircraft maintenance firm in 1946. So it’s true, Jag never produced any motorcycles, but they had a connection to this kind of business for a very short period of time.
Jakus didn’t draw the concept from thin air, he had to look for a donor first and he did found a good one. The 7MC concept is based on the Triumph Speed Triple 1050 but its inspired by Jaguar’s Project 7, a limited edition F-Type powered by a 575hp V8. The 7MC is not the first car-inspired motorcycle design we’ve seen but it’s one of the best.
