Scramblers are officially back! After three decades, these retro-styled bikes are becoming popular again. But there’s a small problem with these retro-looking machines: they are not exactly cheap. For example, the new Ducati Scrambler costs about $8,500. But if you’re on a tight budget, you can still own a Scrambler, you just have to look East. Click through to look at the Sinnis Retrostar 250 – a real Scrambler from China.
The Chinese are getting closer and closer to the European, Japanese and South Korean level in the automobile business. Yes, they still have a long way to go and they can’t produce “Made in Bavaria” quality yet but they are far from producing only crap. So we won’t downplay Sinnis, a motorcycle manufacturer from China. Sinnis produces a wide range of scooters and motorcycles from 50 to 250cc. The most interesting products of their line-up are the new Retrostar 250 and Scrambler 125 models.
The Scrambler 125 – as the name suggests – is a retro-styled Scrambler, powered by a 125cc air-cooled engine. The four-stroke single-cylinder makes 11hp at 8,500 rpm and is coupled with a 5-speed gearbox. Claimed dry weight is 115 kg, seat height is 770 mm. The bike features an electric start, a 10-litres tank, a classic high-level exhaust and an unbeatable price. The bike costs £1,695 ($2,600) plus on the road taxes.

The Retrostar 250 is a slightly larger bike that is powered by a 249cc single-cylinder making 21hp at 7,500 rpm. According to the press release, the Retrostar 250 “lends itself to the glory days of motorcycling, and the Steve McQueen-esk vintage Bonneville feel” and we have to admit, the bike does feature era-correct design cues. Peashooter exhaust, wide bars, upside down forks, nice 17” wheels, solid brakes, chromed fenders and headlight casing – the Retrostar is really retro. Claimed dry weight is 130 kg (285 pounds), tank capacity 10 litres and the seat height 770 mm. You can take the Retrostar 250 for £2,200 plus on-the-road taxes home.
“Released in January 2015, the Retrostar 250cc is set to be a king amongst the 250cc arena. Larger frame, and a really punchy 250cc engine leave you smiling ear to ear on your journey.” said a Sinnis spokesman from the UK importer. Let’s wait for some road tests later this year.
