There are nice tours, there are great motorcycle adventures like Long Way Round and there’s this. The “Beyond Siberia, Road of Bones” is an epic journey through Europe and Asia, offered by the British company called Compass Expeditions. Participants ride for 105 days across a quarter of the earth’s surface, covering 28,500 kilometers and 16 countries.
Here’s a hint what this tour means: over 4 months, participants ride through some of the world’s most scenic yet, challenging regions. The first part of the trip through France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria is just the warm-up with freeways, smooth and quick roads. The real deal begins in Russia where roads can be very badly potholed and the Russian traffic can be aggressive at times.

The so called “Road of Death” in Kazakhstan is all but paved now but can be in terrible condition with massive potholes in some sections. Mongolia has only 400 km / 250 miles of paved road, the remainder is dirt and some of it a little difficult with shallow creek crossings and gravel sections. The eastern section of the Trans Siberian is still dirt. Then there’s the Lena Highway (here’s the telling former name: Highway of Hell): a muddy and very rough road. The “Roads of Bones” is without a doubt the most challenging riding, with sections of mud, washed out bridges corrugations and long distances through the forests. The “Road of Bones” is incredibly dangerous: over 2 million people perished across a 20-year period.
During the trip, riders see blazing deserts, inland seas, mighty mountains, stunning Islamic architecture and a vastness nobody thought could still exist in today’s world. Temperatures vary from +50 degrees to well below freezing. Alps, Kazakh Steppe, Lake Baikal, remote places like Yakutsk are all en route.
How much does a tour like this cost? $30,990 USD if you bring your own bike or $46,215 USD if you want to rent a BMW R1200GS for the trip. A 2×1 hour documentary “Beyond Siberia – Riding the Road of Bones” captures the hardships and dangers of the ride. The film series will be released at MIPTV 2015 event in Cannes this April and the DVD is expected to be available at the end of April for purchase through Compass Expeditions.
If you’re looking for some other adventures, Compass Expeditions is already under was with a second TV series covering a tour from Cairo to Cape Town. That must be an amazing experience, too.
