RM Auctions has just answered the question whether you can put a price on the future. A functional replica of the Lightcycle from the movie Tron: Legacy was sold through an auction by RM Sotheby’s at the Andrews Auto Collection for $77,000 over the weekend. The bike works and rides normally and it is powered by an electric motor. It also features lithium-ion batteries, ride-by-wire throttle and hydraulic brakes.
I was recently watching the Tron Legacy movie and I was really surprised to see how much time on screen the Ducati motorcycles in the film were given. However, the real star of that movie was the motorcycle called the Lightcycle.
Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
The bike was completed in 2012 and was not used at all. From the technological side of view, it’s a relative simple electric motorcycle with stunning look. The bike is powered by a 96V motor, fed by lithium-ion batteries. It’s a direct-drive machine so you won’t find any transmission but it features a fully adjustable fork but since the rear section has a hardtail design, it did not offer much comfort. The Lightcycle also features hydraulic brakes and an internal computer that controls the throttle.
„The bike was partially built by an outside firm and then sent to the Andrews’s own shop for completion. It is a fully functioning motorcycle that can be ridden, as it is powered by a direct-drive electric motor that has lithium batteries, which is mated to a computer-controlled digital electronic transmission. This custom Tron tribute boasts a very low seat height of 28.5 inches, making it easy to ride even at low speeds. The motorcycle is finished in black with a white stripe and boasts an imposing stance to match its performance.” says the press release of RM Auctions.
„After its completion by the Andrews’ in 2012, the bike has only been ridden around their facilities to ensure that it remains in functioning condition. As such, it is in as-new condition and would be an ideal piece for any collection of movie memorabilia. It is unlikely that a similar motorcycle will ever be produced or made available for purchase, making this a truly unique opportunity.” it continues.
According to RM, the bike was estimated to sell for $25,000-$40,000 but an anonymous buyer paid $77,000 for the replica. Of course, we are not surprised since cool things will always find a buyer.
