Kawasaki announced this week its new middleweight naked bike – the Z800 ABS. The newest member of the Kawasaki family features the well-known aggressive, stripped-down styling, a torquey 806cc four-cylinder, KYB suspension, and retails for $8,399. With this MSRP, the bike is cheaper than the Z1000 but costs slightly more than the Yamaha FZ-09. The new Z800 arrives in dealerships this fall.

The aggressive styling of the Kawasaki Z1000 has won it many fans, and now it gets a sibling in the form of the new 2016 Kawasaki Z800 ABS. This mid-level streetfighter brings the same attitude as its bigger brother, with similarly aggressive styling, sportbike heritage and a powerful 806cc four-cylinder engine. The new Z800 will be sold for the first time in the US, but not all of them – it will be sold in every state except California because of the emmission regulations.

The new Z800 is powered by a 806cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled, 16-valve engine. In Europw, this engine delivers 111hp and 61 lbs.ft of torque but the US version only has 94 ponies and 56 lbs.ft of torque. The Z800 features ahigh-tensile steeltubular backbone frame, steel swingarm andlightweight cast aluminum engine subframe.

The biggest problem of the bike may be the suspension. Kawasaki decided to use KYB suspension parts that have only rebound and preload adjustability. There’s a 41mm front fork while at the rear, the Kawasaki Uni-Traksuspension system includes a KYB shock with a piggyback reservoir. The brakes on the Z800 include dual opposed four-piston front brake calipers offering progressive stopping power and feel. The system uses 277mm petal-type front rotors and alightweight Nissin ABS unit. The wheels are six-spoke supersport-style units manufactured using the latest lightweight production technology while tires come from Dunlop.

A couple of words about styling. According to Kawasaki, they wanted to give the bike a streetfighter look. There’s nothing wrong with that but the Z800 is just too aggressive, some might say that it’s ugly.

The 2016 Kawasaki Z800 retails for $8,399 – that’s a lot cheaper than the Z1000 but it’s slightly more than the Yamaha FZ-09 (it costs $8,190). The bike will be offered  in Metallic Spark Black / Flat Ebony and will arrive in dealerships this fall.
