Yamaha has released photos and a video of its new retro-styled production model, the XSR700. The bike is basically the production version of the concept MT-07 restyled by legendary Japanese custom-builder Shinya Kimura. The retro-looking XSR700 uses the FZ-07 platform, taking the frame and 689cc parallel-twin engine. The 2016 Yamaha XSR700 will arrive in dealerships on the continent in November and it will be available in Forest Green or Garage Metal paint schemes.
After Ducati and Honda, Yamaha shows us the newest retro-styled roadster. The new street bike is called the XSR700 and it just looks awesome. The bike follows the manufacturer’s “Faster Sons” philosophy that resulted in Shinya Kimura’s concept bike. That bike pays tribute to the classic XS650.
Just like the Star Bolt, the new XSR700 looks retro, including a two-texture seat and single round headlight sitting on an easily customizable bolt on rear sub-frame. An old school style headlight and fastening stay sets it off at the front, and an aluminium tank unit reminds the rider they’re sitting on a Faster Sons machine. With a wet weight of just 186kg the XSR700 is the first of its kind, a modern day entry-level icon to style up the riding life of both new and experienced riders.

„The speedometer sits between the wide tapered back handlebars, which offer upright riding position for its rider. Use of quality metal materials such as aluminium on several components, including the front fender stay and radiator cover also work to complement the overall retro feel. A short stubby rear muffler provides the right soundtrack and Pirelli Phantom tyres front and rear not only look the part with an authentic pattern, but also do the job to keep the rider connected to the road.” says Yamaha.
Underneath the retro styling beats the heart of the brand’s latest technologies. The 270-degree crank parellel twin actually has character. It delivers 74 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 50.2 lb-ft peaking at 6,500 revs. Yamaha claims the XSR700 can get 54.7 mpg, which would provide a range of about 200 miles. Seat height is 32.1 inch so it’s 0.4-inch taller than the FZ’s. Suspension seems unchanged from the FZ but the subframe is different. The bike features lightweight 10-spoke aluminium wheels and stopping power courtesy of 282mm wavy discs and 4-pot calipers at the front.
There are lots of accessories available to the XSR700 and Yamaha is also creating a full ‘Faster Sons’ apparel range. The range will include super cool leather riding jackets, Sport Heritage gloves and helmets and a host of other items of clothing perfect for both a Sunday morning ride out for coffee or a summer trip to the mecca of custom bike scenes, the Wheels & Waves festival in Biarritz, France.
