German motorcycle manufacturer Horex rises from the ashes of bankruptcy with an all-new model. The unique-looking VR6 Silver Edition was presented at Frankfurt Motor Show in Frankfurt. The roadster is still based on the original VR6 but the bike features a number of updates including a more powerful engine, extensive use of carbon fibre, top-shelf suspension parts, and more premium materials. The VR6 Silver Edition’s production will be limited to just 33 units.
The original Horex VR6 was a very interesting concept when it was first launched back in 2010 but it turned out that European managers and CEO’s do not want to buy a complicated and heavy roadster from a newly founded brand. The company filed bankruptcy but another German firm, 3C Carbon Group has stepped in and prevented Horex from going extinct.
Since they had a good bike to build upon, they didn’t have to develop a brand new model, so they decided to update the original VR6. At the heart of the new bike is still a 1,218cc engine with a unique layout. The cylinders are arranged in two banks of three with a steep 15-degree angle between them. That makes the engine very compact – it’s not much wider than a typical four-cylinder. The upgraded engine delivers 170 hp (125 kW) and 138 Nm (101.8 lb-ft) of torque and has three overhead camshafts and three valves per cylinder. That’s a 10hp increase compared to the original model.

The suspension parts are premium units: there’s a 43mm fully-adjustable upside-down fork up front and a racing-grade Ohlins TTX36GP rear monoshock. The brakes are delivered by Brembo – the VR6 is fitted with 4-pot calipers and two 320mm rotors up front and a 264mm rotor at the rear wheel. Of course, ABS is standard.
One of the few problems with the original VR6 was its weight and this is the area where using lots of carbon fibre parts paid up. The new model is no less than 29kg (63.9 lb) lighter than the first VR6, weighing in 221kg (487.2 lb) dry. The seat subframe is made of carbon fibre while there’s an LCD instrument panel and LED headlights. Oh, and the silencers, the instrument casing, the rear hugger and the chain guide are also made of carbon fibre. The premium brown leather seat is also new, reducing seat height by 20mm to 780 mm (30.7 in).
Horex is set to produce 33 units – the exact number VR6 Café Racer specials that were expected last year had the company not defaulted. Company officials said at the motor show that they still have to arrange some final touches, but they want to launch the model in the very near future. Price has yet to be announced but addressing rich customers who want a ride that’s as exclusive as it is thrilling, the new Horex VR6 might fare better this time with supervision and racing expertise from 3C Carbon Group.
