German motorcycle manufacturer Horex announced its comeback back in June. Their first new bike will be the VR6, a supercharged six-cylinder naked cruiser which features a 15° six-cylinder engine delivering 200hp. The VR6 is a uniquely suitable arrangement for a motorcycle, packing six cylinders into a package only slightly larger than an inline-four and considerably shorter than a V6. Head injuries occur in 80% of all motorcyclist fatalities. A key factor in these injuries is brain swelling inside the helmet and the response time to address the issue. ThermaHelm technology helps to mitigate this problem by cooling the rider's head post-accident. A standard helmet acts like an insulator. The EU commission has recently announced its plans to make ABS mandatory for motorcycles. The presented proposal is currently passing through the EU legislative procedure, and will likely be adopted next year. The regulation is to come into effect from 2017. On the basis of a new generation of brake control systems, Bosch has developed an independent series for motorcycles for the first time. “The ABS 9 systems for motorcycles are the world’s smallest,” says Dr. Werner Struth, president of the Bosch Chassis Systems Control division. Since 2004, the Austrian company has consistently developed its on-road expertise. Both the 690 and 990 Dukes are exciting machines, while the newest member of the Duke family, the 125 was revealed earlier this year at the Intermot show in Cologne. 2011 looks like the end of the road for the current R1 as we know because the 2012 version will be a brand new, radical machine. You could ask, why do we think that? Because the Japanese only add graphics to their top-of-the-line sportsbike, instead of making improvements to the handling/engine/suspension. The 2011 version features the same 998cc, DOHC, four-valve in-line which produces 182hp at 12,500rpm and 85 lb.ft. at 10,000rpm. The bike has a fuel consumption of 40mpg (5,88 l/100km). The Japanese brand already caused a sensation in the motorcycle world earlier this year when they revealed the CBR250R. The bike has a reasonable large displacement engine which outperforms the 125cc category. Now the manufacturer’s in-house tuner, Mugen created a more sporty and agressive version, thanks to the combination of the red and black color scheme. In order to match the body color, seat riders are colored red with Mugen emblems. The guys at Mugen replaced the standard muffler but there’s no word on performance. Read the full article »
